Samdrup Jongkhar is a couple of hours drive from Guwahati airport & the entry point for visitors to Eastern Bhutan. Though head of the regional district & the largest town in Eastern Bhutan it holds few treasures. Not much to see other than the local food markets.
It is a full days drive from Samdrup Jongkhar to Trashigang. On the way, at Dewathang is Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoches's Chokyi Gyatso Institute. The first monastery in Bhutan to have a full secular curriculum as well as its traditional monastic studies.

Leaving Dewathang the hills roll on endlessly. Love driving through this beautiful countryside. Visit villages, small towns, a weaving school. Chat to people, play darts with school children & drink tea. Life is simple here, few tourists. A wonderful introduction to Bhutan & the Bhutanese way of life.
